Prayer is our line of communication with God. When we have something that we need to say to Him, ask Him, or get confirmation about we can simply go to Him and ask Him. This was not always the case, However, when Jesus died on the cross for our sins, the veil was torn giving us direct access to God.
Mark 15:38 says
“And the veil [of the Holy of Holies] of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.”
This allows direct access between God and His believers, meaning we can go and talk to Him on our own. We no longer need a priest or anyone else to talk to Him on our behalf.
Now, there are ways that we should go about praying to God, and here are a few of them.
- In accordance to His will. 1 John 5:14 says “This is the confidence which we have before Him: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.” When it comes to God, His will and His way is the absolute best. He wants nothing but good things for us and will not lead us astray. When we pray according to His will we are making sure that our requests line up with what he has planned for our lives; creating a deeper relationship with Him, a deeper understanding of Him and ensuring that we receive the blessings that He has for us.
- With Persistence. Luke 11:10 says ”For everyone who keeps on asking, receives; and he who keeps on seeking, finds; and to him that keeps on knocking, the door will be opened.” You have to continue to ask God for what you want. Continue to bring your requests before Him and as long as they are in accordance with His will, he will not withhold them from you. But you must be persistent until you get an answer.
- In Faith. James 1:6 says “But we must ask in faith, without doubting, for the one who doubts is like a billowing surge of the sea that is blown about and tossed by the wind.” You cannot come to God praying for something and then have unbelief in your heart. God can do anything and if you truly believe that then you shouldn’t have any doubt that he would do it for you (I know that is difficult, I struggle with it myself). So pray to God with full confidence that whatever promises he has made to you will come true.
- With Obedience. 1 John 3:22 says “and we receive from Him whatever we ask because we keep His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight.” You cannot come to God expecting to receive if you have not been obedient to His word. Even our earthly parents did not reward us or give us want we wanted if we were being disobedient. God gives to those who are believing in Him and doing His will.
These are only a few ways that we should go to God in prayer. As you become a stronger believer God will help you to do everything the correct way. The most important thing is that you just start praying and having an open communication with God. It’s a privilege, so make sure you take advantage of it.
